June is Canadian Dairy Month, so we’ll be highlighting local and Canadian milk, yogurt, cheese, and everyone’s favourite, ice cream.
Balderson Aged Cheddar Cheeses
Bold, sharp, and full of character, Balderson Aged Cheddars are the ultimate cheese lover’s dream. Founded in 1881 by dairy farmers in Lanark County, Ontario, the Balderson Corners Cheese Factory began as a small collective at a rural crossroads named after retired British Army sergeant and homesteader, John Balderson. Known for its carefully aged cheddar with distinctive sharpness and smooth texture, Balderson Cheese grew into a community hub and outlasted competitors. After a fire in 1928, the factory was rebuilt and continued to thrive, expanding through the 20th century. By the 2000s, Balderson had earned a global reputation. Today, it’s crafted in modern facilities in Winchester, Belleville and Windsor, Ontario. Aged to perfection for a rich, complex flavour that elevates every bite, it’s great for everything from a picnic charcuterie board to topping your BBQ burgers.

Armstrong Cheese
Canadian dairy farmers founded the Okanagan region’s very first creamery in 1902, followed by the Armstrong Cheese Co-Op in 1939. Armstrong Cheese swiftly became a renowned business, with temperature-controlled cooling rooms facilitating longer aging and mass production. Fast forward to this century; in 2003-04, Montreal-based Saputo acquired Armstrong Cheese and closed the production plant in Armstrong, BC. Although no longer from its hometown, Armstrong Cheese is still produced from 100% Canadian milk from cows in Abbotsford, BC.
