The Lundberg Family Farm story starts in 1937. Farmers Albert and Frances Lundberg left Nebraska in the wake of the Dust Bowl to start a new life in California’s fertile Sacramento Valley. With their four sons, they pledged to protect the soil by working with nature — a practice called regenerative farming.
In 1969, the second generation of Lundbergs test-planted their first organic crop: 76 acres of brown rice. Building their own mill to process the harvest, they proved there was a market for farm-to-table organic rice. Working with 53 other local farms, they established California Certified Organic Farmers in 1973. This aimed to create consistent standards to guide and grow the organic movement. 1980 saw the introduction of value-added products using their organic crops, like all-natural rice cakes.
In 1987, the reigns passed to the third generation Lundbergs, who have driven the company forward into the 21st century. They offset 100% of power use with wind energy by 2004, launched the Non-GMO Project in 2007, achieved zero waste by 2008, and doubled solar capacity by 2019.
