A seasonal favourite with a very narrow growing season, BC Coronation Grapes are now in season and available in our Produce Department.
Coronation grapes are very round, blue-purple, and have a balanced sweet-tart taste similar to traditional Concord grapes, but are virtually seedless. Developed by Agriculture Canada’s Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre in Summerland in the Okanagan Valley, BC, in the late 1970s, Coronation grapes are a hybrid of Patricia and Himrod grapes. They are a great source of phytonutrients, especially phenols and polyphenols, and Vitamin K, Vitamin B12, and copper.
Coronation grapes are great for snacking and charcuterie boards; as a substitute for berries in baked goods such as pie, muffins and scones; and for making into jams, jellies, and sauces. They also store exceedingly well, keeping fresh in the refrigerator for up to 10 days or frozen for up to a year.
