Kühne Specialty Mustards

Kuhne Mustards at Village Food Markets Sooke

Kühne offers tradition, taste and boldness in every jar.

We’ve been slowly growing our selection of Kühne products, with their line of specialty mustards being the latest addition. More than just a condiment, it’s a balance of nearly 300 years of craftsmanship with modern innovation. Kühne delivers a clean, bold, and reliable taste, plus the peace of mind that comes from buying a product from a company who cares about its sources and production. Whether you prefer spicy or sweet, grainy or smooth, there’s a Kühne mustard for your table.

Kühne offers a variety of mustards, each with a carefully crafted flavour profile:

  • Original Dijon is made according to a traditional recipe from Dijon, France. This mustard provides every meal with the proper measure of hotness and makes fried and barbecued food more digestible.
  • Sweet Mustard is ideal with Bavarian specialties like sausages, roasted pork, or meat loaf. It pairs beautifully with roasted or baked meats that benefit from a mild, sugary-tangy uplift.
  • Herb Mustard adds aromatic complexity, so is great with fish, poultry, or grain bowls.
  • Coarse Mustard, known as Rôtisseur mustard, is a grainy, spicy mustard. As most seeds are intact, it does not lose its aroma when heated. Use it in cooking and as an ingredient in barbecue marinades.
  • Medium Hot Mustard versions are perfect for those who want a stronger punch. Use them in marinades, glazes, or alongside hearty sausages.

Quality seeds, clean ingredients and its taste and texture make Kühne mustards special.

Kühne works with approved, certified suppliers for their mustard seeds and employs strict quality control. They remove foreign matter, clean the seeds, and mill them carefully. Then they blend them with vinegars, water, salt, spices, and sometimes herbs and sweetness depending on the variety. Kühne mustards are made without preservatives, artificial colours, gluten, lactose, and all are vegetarian or vegan. Their whole grain and hot mustards deliver a rich, grainy texture and bold flavour. By contrast, their sweet mustard is a milder and smooth and thinner in texture. Both are ideal for sausages or Bavarian specialties.

Kühne is a 10th generation family-owned business.

Founded in 1722 in Hamburg, Germany, the company began as a small vinegar distillery. Over time, it evolved into one of Europe’s most respected producers of condiments, pickles, mustards, vinegars, and more. Kühne embodies its core values of boldness, independence, respect, and sustainability. In addition to bold flavour, the company encourages taking initiative, challenging norms, and pursuing innovation. Despite centuries of growth, they remain an independent family company, making decisions on their own terms. In their culture, the value of respect for employee well-being remains central. From procurement of raw materials to packaging, they aim for sustainable practices. Sourcing much of their produce locally in Germany, they work with long-standing supplier relationships and are attentive to environmental impact.
